I Dub Thee... 1973

This is me seeing Dallas' for the first time. You'll note the silver circle with the point on my shirt which of course was a Dallas Cowboys football helmet. And so he was named!

Happy Birth Days 1973

Again, our first meet and greet. That's my father who just made me very happy- and a Master as well

Balcony 1977

Dallas on his perch with me and my sister (Baby) down below
|
Big Bay Window

Though he's not in this picture, Dallas in the big bay window was as much a fixture as any part of the physical house ".
|
Surrounded By Shag

That 70's green shag carpet which covered the huge living room, dining room, stair case and upstairs hallway was like laying on a cloud.
|
Civil War Monument 1979

That's me standing on the village center civil war monument best referenced in the book as the "Safe" location in tag games. That also would have been ground zero during the Halloween wars. The picture taker would have been standing in front of Quinns Market.
|
Spike Fenced- Summer 1980

Beaner and I are torchering ants in this particular print but you get a good view of the iron spiked fence Dallas would jump and eventually signal his acceptance of old age.
|
Spike Fenced- Winter 1979

This picture shows more of the length of the fence. That's my father and my sister (Baby) tossing Dallas snowballs. He would have had to jump that fence into the adjoing yard then jump it again on the other side to engage General in his beatdown of Scooter.
|
Stoopified 1980

Poor Dallas, he looks miserable chained to the back stoop. The chain extends over to the basketball post. Many times in the novel he took a flaying leap off those steps in pursuit of small game or simply free roamin' exhuberance. That's me and my sister (Nat) beside him. I'm wearing classic Nike sneakers and knee high socks- a dead give away to the date.
|
The Yard

Taken from the an upstairs window you see the basketball post which grounded dallas' leash and the modest yard he normally dug up rocks to bark at. The iron spiked fence would be off to the right.
|
The Park

This would be part of the view from the Bay Window looking into Gaines Park. It was early spring so there was no foliage on the trees or butternuts on the ground. Many of the dog fights took place in this park.
|
Sam's Cast

How awsome it was for Sam's owners to submit this picture. You'll recall Sam getting tagged by a car then getting a cast that made him fall over when he lifted his leg to piss. No wonder Dallas had a moment of human response from witnessing that comical moment.
|
On Patrol 1977

An outrageous story in the book has Sugar going out for safety patrol with Master Mark which wins him favor with the local kids. Dallas in jealousy plots to stain Sugars image by humpin' Sugar's bitch then rubbing the oder on Scooter which causes Sugar to attack the handicapped Scooter in front of the school kids. Well, at least the safety belts really happened. That's Ret's house in the background.
|
Sugar's Yearbook Photo 1980

From The Sherburne-Earlville 1981 yearbook, this is our Jr. High Baseball team photo. I'm the mop head and at the very top is Master Mark which explains a bit why Sugar is in the picture.
|
Heroe's Cape Photo 1973

Taken at my birthday party for which I received Dallas, this is the blue cape which a year or so later was worn by Dallas around the village during a very rainy day. As if the cape wasn't enough he also had a superman logo shirt on as well. The cape was lost that day.
|
Butternuts

These round, hard, non edible nuts are found throughout Gaines Park as an endless supply of ammunition in the butternut wars described in Chapter 9
|
Tuffy & Mitsy in the Mercedes

Dallas hated these 2 "rug muts". He recited cruel poodel poems as a release, mostly because they snobbed around town safely in the family mercedes.
